SPOC Welcomes Bryant & Stratton PTA Students for a Prosthetics & Orthotics In-Service
At Syracuse Prosthetic & Orthotic Center (SPOC), we believe the best patient outcomes happen when healthcare professionals work together. That's why we were excited to welcome nine new students from the Bryant & Stratton Physical Therapist Assistant Program for a hands-on prosthetics and orthotics educational experience.
As these students begin their journey into the field of physical therapy, we wanted to provide a foundational understanding of prosthetic and orthotic care while opening the door for future collaboration. Many of these students will one day work alongside prosthetists and orthotists to help patients regain mobility, independence, and confidence. Building those connections early benefits both clinicians and the patients they serve.
During their visit, students toured our clinic and fabrication lab while learning about the history and evolution of prosthetic technology. We discussed the various components that make up modern prosthetic devices, explored common orthotic solutions, and talked about how physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, prosthetists, and orthotists work together toward shared patient goals.
One of the highlights of the day was giving students a behind-the-scenes look at the fabrication process. They watched Ed pull a prosthetic socket, observed work being completed in the plaster room, and saw an ankle-foot orthosis (AFO) modification being performed in the lab. These experiences helped connect classroom concepts to the real-world processes involved in creating custom devices for patients.
Beyond the technical aspects of prosthetic and orthotic care, the discussion focused on communication and teamwork. Successful patient outcomes often depend on a coordinated approach, with therapists and prosthetic providers sharing information, addressing challenges, and supporting patients throughout their rehabilitation journey.
We are grateful to the Bryant & Stratton PTA students for spending time with us and engaging in thoughtful discussions throughout the day. We look forward to seeing these future healthcare professionals grow in their careers and hope this experience provides valuable insight into the important role prosthetics and orthotics play in patient care.
At SPOC, we're always proud to support educational opportunities that strengthen our healthcare community and ultimately improve the lives of the patients we serve.
