Building a Stronger Peer Support Community at SPOC

No two limb loss journeys are exactly the same.

Whether someone is adjusting to life after an amputation, recovering from trauma, managing a congenital limb difference, or navigating a new prosthesis, each person's experience comes with unique challenges. While clinical care is essential, one of the most powerful forms of support often comes from talking with someone who has truly been there.

At Syracuse Prosthetic & Orthotic Center (SPOC), we're excited to be building a more comprehensive peer support program designed to connect patients with individuals who have lived experiences similar to their own.

Why Peer Support Matters

Life after limb loss can feel overwhelming. Questions, uncertainty, and change can make the journey feel isolating, especially in the beginning. Having someone who understands the emotional and practical realities of the process can make all the difference.

Peer support offers encouragement that extends beyond appointments. It's the reassurance that recovery isn't a straight line, the confidence that challenges can be overcome, and the opportunity to learn from someone who has already walked a similar path.

Our goal is to create meaningful connections between patients and peer mentors whose experiences align with their individual circumstances, helping each person feel seen, understood, and supported.

Building a Network of Shared Experiences

As we continue developing our peer support program, we're looking to build a diverse network of volunteers who represent many different experiences and backgrounds.

This includes individuals with:

  • Above-knee or below-knee amputations

  • Upper-limb differences

  • Congenital limb differences

  • Traumatic limb loss

  • Limb loss related to diabetes, vascular disease, cancer, or other medical conditions

  • Different ages, lifestyles, careers, and activity levels

Every story has the potential to encourage someone else. By connecting patients with people who have faced similar circumstances, we hope to provide support that feels personal, relatable, and empowering.

Continuing Our Partnership with EnMotion

Annual Enmotion Picnic

As this program grows, we're proud to continue hosting the EnMotion Support Group at SPOC.

EnMotion is a local amputee support group dedicated to empowering and educating individuals with limb loss, as well as their families and caregivers. Meetings provide a welcoming environment where members share experiences, ask questions, encourage one another, and learn from guest speakers covering topics such as prosthetic technology, rehabilitation, health, wellness, and everyday life with limb loss.

The group also hosts social events throughout the year, creating opportunities for friendships and support beyond the clinic.

EnMotion meets at the SPOC office on the second Tuesday of each month from April through December at 3300 Vickery Road in Liverpool. Amputees, caregivers, family members, and friends are always welcome.

Every limb loss journey is different, but no one should have to navigate it alone. By expanding our peer support program and continuing to partner with EnMotion, Syracuse Prosthetic & Orthotic Center is committed to creating opportunities for connection, encouragement, and shared understanding. Whether through one-on-one conversations or group support, our goal is to help every patient feel supported by a community that truly understands the path they're walking.
