Adaptive Sports in Syracuse: Start with Movement, Find Community

At Syracuse Prosthetic & Orthotic Center, we believe mobility and an active lifestyle are essential to overall well-being.

Whether you are just beginning your journey or looking for new ways to stay active, Central New York offers a wide range of adaptive sports and community resources for individuals with limb loss or limb difference.

These opportunities are about more than movement. They build confidence, independence, and meaningful connections.

Sometimes, it starts with something small.

One of our patients was introduced to rock climbing through a conversation with a member of our SPOC team and an adaptive sports blog we had shared. She decided to try an adaptive climbing night here in Syracuse.

She was simply curious.

Less than a year later, she was competing at the USA Climbing Para Climbing National Championships.

“I was incredibly nervous,” she shared. “The walls were much higher than what I was used to. I started to panic a bit.”

Her story is not about starting at the top.It is about being willing to start at all.

Start with Movement

Not everyone is training for competition. And they do not need to be.

Progress often begins with simple, meaningful goals:

  • Walking confidently through your home

  • Navigating stairs or uneven ground

  • Returning to work or daily routines

  • Playing with your kids or grandkids

  • Getting back to activities you enjoy

From there, it grows.

At Syracuse Prosthetic & Orthotic Center, we encourage starting small and building consistency:

Start here:

  • Walk 10 to 15 minutes each day

  • Practice balance and weight shifting

  • Add light strength exercises 2 to 3 times per week

  • Wear your prosthesis consistently to build comfort and trust

Then build:

  • Increase your time and distance

  • Explore parks and community spaces

  • Add strength and functional training

  • Try a recreational or adaptive sport

Movement builds strength.Strength builds confidence.Confidence opens doors.

The Right Support Makes a Difference

As Mercy’s goals evolved, so did her needs.

For everyday life, she uses a prosthetic leg designed for stability and daily mobility.

For climbing, she uses a second, specialized prosthetic leg designed specifically for athletic performance. This allows for greater movement, flexibility, and control on the wall.

When insurance would not cover a second prosthesis, support from Syracuse Prosthetic & Orthotic Center and the Challenged Champions Foundation helped make it possible for her to continue pursuing the sport.

That support helped turn interest into opportunity.

More Than Movement

Adaptive sports are about more than physical activity.

They are about:

  • Confidence

  • Independence

  • Community

  • Possibility

For some, that means walking a little farther each day. For others, it means trying something new.

And for some, it can lead to opportunities they never imagined.
