Expanding What’s Possible: Faster Turnaround, Custom TLSOs, and a Growing In-House Lab
At Syracuse Prosthetic & Orthotic Center (SPOC), we’re always looking for ways to better serve our patients — faster, smarter, and with even more personalized care. That’s why we’re proud to share some exciting updates about our fabrication capabilities, new custom brace offerings, and expanding lab space.
Custom TLSOs — Precision Fit, Faster Than Ever
When it comes to comfort and spinal stability, every detail matters. Our custom thoracolumbosacral orthoses (TLSOs) — specialized back braces that support the thoracic (mid), lumbar (lower), and sacral (base) regions of the spine are fabricated on-site. This rapid turnaround means patients receive the high-quality spinal support they need without unnecessary delays.
Each TLSO is individually crafted and custom-fit to the patient, providing the stability and alignment necessary to promote healing, correct posture, and support long-term spinal health. By streamlining our in-house production process, we ensure that patients return to mobility and comfort with confidence.
What Makes a TLSO Custom
A TLSO is used to stabilize and protect the spine following injury, surgery, or for conditions such as scoliosis, fractures, or degenerative disorders. By limiting motion and maintaining proper spinal alignment, it helps reduce pain, promote healing, and prevent further injury.
Unlike prefabricated “off-the-shelf” braces, a custom TLSO is designed specifically for the individual. The process begins with a precise mold or digital scan of the patient’s torso, allowing our technicians to fabricate a brace that matches their exact body shape and medical needs. The result? A more comfortable fit, greater effectiveness, and improved outcomes.
Each custom TLSO typically consists of rigid thermoplastic shells lined with soft foam for comfort. It may open in the front, back, or side for easy application and is secured with adjustable straps.
Common uses include:
Post-surgical spinal stabilization
Fracture or trauma recovery
Scoliosis management
Degenerative disc or vertebral conditions
Support during rehabilitation
Expanding Our Facility and Lab Capabilities
As our patient community grows, so does our commitment to innovation. Over the next year, SPOC will be expanding both our facility and our on-site fabrication lab, combining the expertise of our long-standing SPOC technicians with the skilled team from CNY Orthopedic Appliances.
This expansion represents more than just additional square footage — it reflects a deeper investment in the scope and breadth of services we provide. With the combined experience of two dedicated teams, we’ll have even greater capability to design and produce a full range of prosthetic and orthotic devices right here in Central New York. From spinal orthoses to lower-limb prosthetics, each device is crafted with precision and care by specialists who understand that every fit changes a life.
Looking Ahead to Fall 2026
By Fall 2026, our enhanced facility will stand as a testament to what’s possible when craftsmanship, technology, and compassion come together. With expanded space, advanced tools, and a unified team of experts, SPOC will continue to lead the way in custom prosthetic and orthotic care — always focused on what matters most: helping people move, live, and thrive.
